The method is older than the app. A children's publisher suggested printing a poem, blacking out a few words with a marker, reciting it, then blacking out more. I kept that rule and gave the marker's job to the screen. Every hidden word keeps its length on purpose: when the words are gone, their outline is what you hold on to.

Press Speak and say the stanza. Each hidden word opens when the app hears it. Get through every word without peeking and the text counts as learned.

- Close is good enough. A word passes at 60% similarity, or 50% if it has three letters or fewer, and accents and punctuation are ignored.
- The web app listens in 13 languages. On iPhone, recognition works offline.
- If you peek at a word during the check, the text isn't counted as learned.
A text passed with peeks would feel like progress and teach nothing, so the app doesn't count it and shows no celebration. The web check is a port of the iPhone one, with the same similarity thresholds and the same filters for half-said words and repeats.

Words you get right in Check become energy. New neurons appear as your total grows, and a road between two of them costs 100⚡. Skip a day and one road cracks orange; repairing it costs 10⚡. Leave it two days and the road is gone.

Three rewards came before the map.
Points came first: one recognised word, one point, a number that only ticked up and showed no progress you could see. Then portraits: every learned word uncovered one dot of a writer's face, 1,600 dots per face, and uncovering them felt like a chore. Then flags: a little character walked to a flag for every 1,000 stars, with achievements next to it.
I switched all three off for the map, because it shows forgetting as well as learning. A day without practice cracks a road you can see. One button handles the rest and always offers the next useful step: repair, build, learn more to earn energy, or wait for new neurons.

The iPhone app came first. For the web version I ported its logic from Swift piece by piece: how a text splits into words, how a spoken word is matched, where neurons stand and which road comes next. A recitation is judged and a map grows by the same rules on both.

Guests get three minutes so they can try the voice check before making an account. The signed-in limit used to be six minutes. The logs from late July 2026 showed people signing in when asked and hitting the paywall three or four minutes later, which read as a trick, so the limit went up to twelve.
